Welcome to the Saint John the Evangelist Parish website!

Please join us for Solemn Vespers, May 30 at 6:30 PM!

Saint John’s Parish began in 1847 and was established as an independent Catholic parish in 1854 and as the Mother Church for the growing Catholic community of Stamford, Darien, Greenwich and surrounding areas. All Catholic parishes and institutions in this area have their roots in Saint John’s Parish. Today we are the parish for downtown Stamford.

Mass & Confessions

We offer two weekday Masses at 8: 00 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with confessions heard Monday through Friday 30 minutes prior to each Mass. Confessions are heard on Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Likewise, Confessions are heard each Sunday: 7:00 a.m.-7:30 a.m.; 9:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-12 noon.

Liturgical Music

Saint John’s choirs provide a variety of musical settings for the weekend Masses, all of which are in English.  The Adult Choir offers traditional Catholic hymns at the Saturday 4: 00 p.m. Mass. The Children’s Choir sings at the 10: 00 a.m. Family Mass, and the Parish Choir offers Gregorian Chant, polyphonic works and Mass settings by Tallis, Palestrina, Victoria, Mozart, Haydn, Faure and Vaughn Williams each Sunday at the 12 noon Mass.  The Haitian choir fills the church with the spiritual music of the Caribbean at the Sunday 6:00 p.m. Haitian Mass, celebrated in Creole and French.

Parish Programs

A variety of spiritual, cultural and catechetical activities and programs are offered during the year, including:

The Holy Name Society, a parish men’s prayer breakfast and catechetical lecture every Friday beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the rectory.

The Saint Anne Family Society meets on Sunday evenings at 5:00 p.m. in the parish hall, September though June, for Eucharistic Adoration in the church followed by a potluck supper for parents and children.

Theology on Tap offers lectures and discussions about the Catholic Faith at Bennigan's restaurant, 300 Atlantic St. (across the street from the church) on the second Monday of each month, from September through May, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Sunday School (CCD) for the children of the parish is offered on Sunday mornings during the school year at 8:30 a.m., while the parents are offered discussion groups about the faith, followed by the Family Mass at 10 a.m.

The Saint Monica Institute for Patristic Studies offers monthly informal reading groups in the faith of the early Church, meeting each Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. throughout the year. We also sponsor an informal Latin reading group, that translates classical and ecclesiastical works, and which meets Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. Both these groups meet in the Rectory.

Young adults meet monthly in our two parish groups: Saint Maria Goretti Society, for high school girls, and the Saint Dominic Savio Society, for high school boys. Each meets monthly for prayer, a brief lecture about the faith, and for various activities.

Our Pro-Life Group meets each Wednesday morning to pray before the local abortion clinic.

The Parish Bookstore offers a wide selection of Catholic literature, as well as sacramentals.

Convert classes and R.C.I.A. are by appointment with the priests, as are baptisms and weddings. Engaged couples meet individually with one of the priests for a six-month marriage preparation program, which includes training in Natural Family Planning and meetings with other young couples.

The spiritual care of the sick and elderly, at home, nursing facilities, or in hospital, is a special concern of the parish, with regular visits by the priests and by Eucharistic ministers. Please contact the parish to inform us of any serious illness or surgery.

Saint John’s community is composed of American-born Catholics and Catholics from around the world, forming a truly cosmopolitan community in the heart of downtown Stamford. All are welcome a Saint John’s, truly the Mother Church of Stamford.
